Matchroom Boxing sign Riyadh Season extension

Matchroom Boxing have signed a sponsorship extension with Riyadh Season and will be involved in Usyk vs Verhoeven in Egypt.

Matchroom Boxing weren’t on the good sides of the powers of Riyadh Season and SELA once upon a time.

When Turki Al-Sheikh and SELA announced their inaugural Riyadh Season boxing event, Eddie Hearn did not hold back.

The fight was Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou.

With it being the professional debut of Ngannou as well as a Queensberry lead event, Eddie Hearn tried to laugh it out of town.

Unsurprisingly, this didn’t go down well with Turki Al-Sheikh.

Come December 2023, the disagreements between SELA and Matchroom had been squashed.

Now what ensued caught all boxing fans off guard.

Under the Riyadh Season banner, the sports biggest promoters and broadcasters were working together, putting on some of the sports biggest events in recent times.

The famous bitter feud between Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn was put to bed, and the two now have a brilliant working relationship.

Over the last two and a half years, Matchroom have consistently worked alongside Riyadh Season and The Ring Magazine to deliver major nights for the boxing calendar.

But in recent months, speculation has grown around a shift of interest from Saudi Arabia.

The new promotion ZUFFA Boxing, fronted by Dana White, has been tipped to ‘revolutionise the sport’, and take over from the existing promotions.

ZUFFA is financially backed by SELA.

Dana White and Eddie Hearn have engaged in a fully fledged promotional battle.

This has raised questions as to whether the Saudi Arabian investment into the existing promotions is set to expire.

Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions had prepared to take legal action against Turki Al-Sheikh and SELA over breaches of contracts.

But it has now been reported by The Ring Magazine that:

“Sources close to Matchroom have confirmed that they have now agreed an extension of their sponsorship with Riyadh Season and will be involved in the ‘Glory in Giza’ fight headlined by Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven in Egypt in May”.

With continued support from the financial powerhouses of Saudi Arabia, and a new 5 year contract extension with broadcaster DAZN, the future is looking bright for the Essex based global sports promotion.
