Skye Nicolson returns at home.
Skye Nicolson is one of the most popular names in Australian boxing. Not just on the women’s side, but the whole country.
The silky-smooth operator possesses some of the most advanced technical skills of any female boxer in the world, and they saw her pick up the WBC featherweight title as a result.
But after a loss almost a year ago to America’s Tiara Brown, Nicolson has moved down to super-bantamweight, where she has gone 3-0 and won the WBC interim title.
This stands her in good stead for a showdown with three-belt champion Ellie Scotney, who fights Mayelli Flores for the undisputed championship this April.
But before then, Nicolson will have to get through the first defence of her interim title, which Matchroom Boxing announced today.
Nicolson (15-1, 3 KOs) will be taking on Mariah Turner (12-1, 6 KOs) in an all-Australasian bout at the Melbourne Pavilion on the 29th of April.
The undercard features an IBF Inter-Continental super-welterweight title fight between Andrew Hunt (11-0-1, 6 KOs) and Benjamin Hussain (13-2, 8 KOs).
Also on the bill is a clash between Jake Wyllie (18-2-1 (1), 16 KOs) and Ibrahim Balla (17-3, 7 KOs) for the IBF Pan Pacific lightweight title.
The most surprising addition on the show, however, is heavyweight puncher Teremoana Teremoana (9-0, 9 KOs), who currently has a fight scheduled against Curtis Harper on the 21st of March on the Carlos Adames vs. Austin Williams undercard.
This means a little over a month between two fights for the former 2024 Paris Olympian, an almost unprecedented level of activity for a boxer in today’s era.
With Australian boxing perhaps soon to be lacking its main flagbearer (Jai Opetaia) in the way of active world champions, this card should provide fans in that part of the world with a nice bit of entertainment.
