Ben Whittaker’s return announced.
Ben Whittaker is the perfect example of a fighter flourishing in the age of social media. The divisive figure, whether you like him or not, is undoubtedly a case of the right character being around at the right time.
Despite still largely being an unknown quantity, Whittaker has exploded in popularity online. This is because we live in an era where people can take flashy fight highlights, slow them down, add music, and watch the views rack up.
Whittaker is a laughing, dancing showboat. He taunts his opponents, sticking out his chin as an invitation, then quickly turning his head so his foe’s punches whistle past by millimetres.
We have seen this style before, and the fighters who can pull it off well become one boxing fan’s sole object of hatred and another’s brand-new favourite.
Think of Emanuel Augustus, “The Drunken Master” who is probably more famous following the conclusion of his career than he ever was during it.
Think of Nicolino Locche, one of Argentina’s very best. Or you can think of ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, probably the most popular comparison people make to Whittaker.
Whittaker’s online fame is an accurate representation of how Hamed would have been reacted to if his career had started during the digital age. Like Hamed, there are those cheering Whittaker on, yet others who are ready to laugh at his downfall.
But no matter what, people will be watching, and they will do so again in just under a month’s time.
Ben Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs) will be returning on the 18th of April on the Callum Smith vs. David Morrell undercard. The WBO interim light-heavyweight title fight will be taking place at the Liverpool Arena in Liverpool, England.
It is expected that after this fight, Whittaker will fight again over in America just a few weeks later. This means that his opponent on the Smith-Morrell card is likely to be a soft touch, so Whittaker will be able to perform his tricks and moves to his heart’s delight.
