Liverpudlian super-bantamweight return date announced.
If you’ve been paying attention to the British super-bantamweight scene, you’re bound to be familiar with Peter McGrail, the smooth Merseyside southpaw and former 2020 Summer Olympian.
The 29-year-old Liverpudlian is part of a conveyor belt of talent from Paul Stevenson’s Everton Red Triangle Gym, a stable that has also produced former WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball, bantamweight contender Andrew Cain, fellow 122-pounder Brad Strand, and several more.
McGrail was considered one of the most promising British prospects out there, possessing skill and reflexes that some even dared to compare to the great Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Indeed, McGrail appeared to dance to a similar tune, one that his opponents just didn’t seem to hear. And after racing to 8-0 in the first two years of his professional career, he would appear on the undercard of the unified flyweight title fight between Sunny Edwards and Jesse Rodríguez in the United States.
His opponent was Ja’Rico O’Quinn, a 16-1-1 American who McGrail was supposed to look good against. And across the first four rounds, he did. In fact, he looked brilliant, dropping O’Quinn once in the second and fourth rounds each.
But in the fifth, O’Quinn landed one single shot that rendered McGrail unconscious, resulting in the first loss of his career.
Since then, McGrail has gone 4-1, most recently losing a very close decision to Shabaz Masoud in December. No longer undefeated, the next moves of McGrail (12-2, 6 KOs) have been up in the air.
Now, however, we have confirmation of when he will be making his return, as Matchroom Boxing announced on their personal Twitter that Peter McGrail will next be appearing on the undercard of the WBO interim light-heavyweight fight between Callum Smith and David Morrell.
McGrail will see his return on the 18th of April in his native Liverpool, where fellow Liverpudlian Smith will be headlining. Not bad at all for his first fight back.
