Jack Catterall to not face expected opponent next.
Jack Catterall is one of the best British fighters currently active who has yet to win a world title.
In the opinion of the vast majority of the boxing populace, he should have already held one. In fact, those same people think he should have won all of them.
When Catterall fought Josh Taylor for the undisputed super-lightweight championship in February of 2022, most saw it as nothing more than an easy defence for the champion Taylor, who was fighting at home in Glasgow, Scotland.
It’s hard to say at what point the partisan crowd realised that the reality was far different, but they had to have known by the time Catterall dropped Taylor for the first time in his career in the 8th round.
By fight’s end, there seemed to be no doubt that Catterall had done enough to win. However, two of the judges did not think so, awarding Taylor a decision that left the boxing world disgusted.
Since then, Catterall has gone 6-1, a run that includes a rematch victory over Taylor. And after moving up in weight, Catterall scalped both Harlem Eubank and Ekow Essuman, his two most recent wins.
Catterall’s next appearance was believed to be against former unified super-lightweight champion Jose Ramirez. However, Sam Jones (Catterall’s manager) has now revealed in an interview with iFL TV that those talks have collapsed.
“We had a fight done with Ramirez. Well, we were headin’ that way”, Jones said. “It looked like it was set in stone. We had the date, and the bottom line is, Rick Mirigian [Ramirez’s manager] asked for an amount of money from Matchroom to make the fight happen in Fresno, in Ramirez’s hometown, and Matchroom didn’t wanna pay it.”
Catterall is currently #1 with the WBO at welterweight, and he is expected to be made mandatory to WBO champion Devin Haney.
