Fans are eagergly waiting for the compatriots to run it back.
Fabio Wardley made his first defence of the WBO heavyweight title against Daniel Dubois in May.
The Ipswich native lost his belt after a brave display but suffered significant facial injuries during a punishing contest.
While Wardley avoided hospital, it was clear he would need time to recover from injuries sustained in the gruelling battle.
During his recovery, he activated the rematch clause in his contract and the sequel was expected to take place in the final quarter of 2026.
But Wardley’s manager, Michael Ofo, has now revealed that is likely not the case anymore.
He told Boxing Scene: “No news yet [on when the rematch will be], but we’ve activated the rematch clause.
“I’ve spoken to Fabio. Fabio’s excited to be in such a fight again, knows the mistakes that he made, and wants to get it back in blood.
“Again, I think it’s down to when Fabio wants to take it. He’s resting at the moment.
“We have activated the rematch so that it will happen in due time, and I can guarantee that Fabio will be 100 per cent when that fight does happen…
“The clause is in favour of Fabio. So there’s no rush. I’ve heard people say it’s going to happen within three months.
“It’s not going to happen within three months. It happens when Fabio’s ready.”
How bad were Fabio Wardley’s injuries?
There was concern over the injuries that Wardley sustained back in May, after he was left with blood spewing profusely from large gashes above his eyes and from his nose.
Ofo insisted it looked worse than it was; he explained: “He came out of the ring. Numerous doctors saw him backstage. He wasn’t concussed.
“There was nothing broken. No nose broken, no fractures. It was purely just the cosmetics. So it’s just blood, which his nose always goes.
“So yeah, he’s resting up, healing, and he’s actually been doing a little bit of training. So Fabio’s fine.”
