Despite rumours of retirement, Liam Smith has revealed he will return to the ring this June.
At 37 years old, 2026 is likely to be the last roll of the dice for Liam “Beefy Smith (33-5-1, 20ko’s).
In a career that spans back to 2008, there’s very little the Liverpudlian hasn’t achieved.
Back in 2015, Smith realised a life-long dream of becoming a world champion.
After two successive defences, Smith travelled to Texas to fight ‘the face of boxing’ Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39ko’s).
His world title reign ended in a 9th round defeat, but the opportunities certainly didn’t stop there.
Two fights with Chris Eubank Jr (35-4, 25ko’s) brought PPV nights to Sky Sports and BOXXER.
To this day Liam Smith is the only man to have stopped Chris Eubank Jr.
Despite being on the end of consecutive to defeats, Liam Smith still has plenty of opportunities on the table.
Speaking to IFL TV, Smith stated: “I am not retired, I’m back in the ring soon, in June”.
“I’ve never had so many offers and options, and I don’t mean that in a big headed way”.
“We know the position I’m in, I’m coming off of a loss, but again I said to everybody, I will take this fight when I am fit and ready”.
“The Eubank fight it is well documented the injury I had, and the Mckenna one, I just rushed into that one”.
“I’ve learnt my lesson, and that’s the position I’m in”.
“I will have an 8 rounder in June, and then I should have a big fight after”.
It has been made no secret that Liam Smith was offered to fight British and Commonwealth middleweight champion George Liddard (14-0, 8ko’s).
The fight came too soon for ‘Beefy’.
Liddard instead defeated Tyler Denny via unanimous decision (21-4-3, 1ko).
Another fight that has been rumoured for Smith is Denzel Bentley (22-3-1, 18ko’s).
Bentley is now the WBO interim middleweight champion.
Could a fight between the two potentially be for a vacant world title due to the current champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (17-0, 12ko’s) failing a VADA test?
