Lester Martinez ‘more than ready’ to face Canelo Alvarez

The Guatemalan star has a clear goal in mind.

Lester Martinez claimed the WBC super middleweight interim title in March after outpointing Immanuwel Aleem.

He now defends it against Luka Plantic at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on August 29.

Martinez is certainly not overlooking the dangers that come with facing unbeaten Plantic as he gears up for their showdown.

However, the 30-year-old recognises that a win would likely put him in line for a shot at Canelo Alvarez or Christian Mbilli.

Martinez explained: “Of course, I’m going to be looking at this fight coming up with Canelo and Mbilli.

“Right now, my immediate focus is on Luka and taking care of business on August 29, defending my [interim] title.

“Then we can look forward to that tremendous fight [Mbilli-Alvarez] and hope that, yes, we fight the winner.

“I’m gonna train very hard. I’m gonna do everything I can to make things work, so I can defend my title, and then move on to fight either the rematch [against Mbilli] or the fight against Canelo.

“I hope that after my fight, my defence, that’s the fight that comes next. And we will be more than ready for that fight too.”

Martinez will have to wait a little while longer, though.

As in the latest report by The Ring Magazine, Canelo and Mbilli will now be fighting in October.

The world title fight is set to form part of the Riyadh Season 2026-2027 schedule.

While the exact date has yet to be confirmed, Boxing King Media will share updates in due course.
