Kieron Conway confirms weight for remainder of career.
Kieron ‘Too Class’ Conway (23-4-1, 7 KOs) has long been one of the best middleweights on the domestic scene.
The Northampton man has fought some good 160-pound names in and out of Britain, first suffering defeat in a curious three-round fight to Derrick Osaze.
As a super-welterweight, he drew with Ted Cheeseman for the British title, and he beat Macaulay McGowan after moving back up to middleweight.
Down at super-welterweight in his very next fight, he journeyed to the United States and lost a split decision to the (currently world-ranked) Souleymane Cissokho, even scoring a knockdown over the Senegal-born Frenchman.
Conway would beat JJ Metcalf in his next ring appearance, then went to America once more a few fights later, losing a decision to soon-to-be title challenger Austin Williams once more at 160 pounds.
Two fights later, Conway would kick off the best run of his career, stopping domestic foe Linus Udofia in six rounds. After that, Conway took part in the scrapped Japanese Prizefighter tournament, stopping 19-1 Chinese puncher Ainiwaer Yilixiati.
A split-decision victory over Ryan Kelly won Conway the Commonwealth title in his next fight, and he then dominated Wales’s Gerome Warburton to win the British title immediately after.
Conway’s purple patch would come to an end against George Liddard, the undefeated 23-year-old contender who dominated Conway to his first stoppage defeat. Despite Conway’s huge advantage in experience, he couldn’t overcome Liddard’s natural talent.
It has been said since that Conway was perhaps struggling to make the weight during the Liddard fight. That would appear to be so, as Conway has now announced in an interview with International Boxing News that he will be fighting at super-middleweight from now on.
Conway previously fought in the 168-pound division for his wins over Harry Matthews, Gregory Tenel, and Jorge Silva. However, there are a number of great fights he could be in at his new weight.
