Katie Taylor has dropped the bombshell announcement when speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE.
Off the back of defeating Amanda Serrano for the third time, in a record breaking Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) all female boxing event, Katie Taylor has dropped a bombshell by announcing plans for retirement.
The Olympic Gold medalist has become one of the most decorated fighters of all time, as well as a pioneer and inspiration in female sport.
Katie Taylor had to wait until her 23rd professional bout for a homecoming to Ireland.
With back to back fights against Chantelle Cameron in the 3 arena in Dublin, Taylor has revealed that 2026 will be her final year in the sport.
Speaking to Irish channel RTE, Katie Taylor stated, “I would love to end my career here in Ireland.
“This is my last year, probably, in the ring boxing. I’m going to be 40 this year.
“I would love to end my career here. And I would absolutely love to have an opportunity to fight here in Croke Park. That would be the icing on the cake for me. That would be an absolute dream come true.
“I’m not sure if it’s ever going to happen, but that is the dream that I have. I’m excited to see what this year has for me”.
Croke Park is the fourth largest stadium in Europe, a fitting and iconic venue for someone like Katie Taylor who moved the goalposts for women’s boxing.
Taylor along with long-standing rival Serrano have paved the way for future female fighters.
When speaking on the current climate of women’s boxing to RTE, Taylor said, “I think we are making great progress in that area, but it’s very, very slow.
“It’s very frustrating to think if I was a male, I’d be an absolute multi, multi, multi-millionaire now.”
It is unconfirmed at this stage whether Katie Taylor will fight again this year.
However the opportunity to fight at her beloved Croke Park seems to be something Taylor cannot refuse.
Especially if she does bow out of the sport in this calendar year.
