Katie Taylor will fight once more before calling an end to a ground-breaking career, with aims to finally land the Croke Park homecoming.
Katie Taylor (25-1, 6ko’s) is a pioneer of boxing.
From pretending to be a boy so she could box as a young amateur, to headlining Madison Square Garden twice, Taylor is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
Her most recent chapter of what has been an iconic career has involved a famous trilogy with Amanda Serrano.
All three fights have been back and forth spectacles, but the Irishwomen has had her hand raised in every single fight.
Furthermore, Taylor’s only blemish on her professional record was against Chantelle Cameron, a defeat that she quickly recovered from winning the rematch.
Despite having a career full of record-breaking moments, there’s one thing that has avoided Taylor to this point.
A fight at her beloved Croke Park in Dublin has been top of the wish list.
Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn have previously held talks with the Irish government and Croke Park to showcase this spectacle.
However, Hearn has previously stated that the site costs for Croke Park are three times the costs of Wembley Stadium.
Subsequently, this highlights the unviability of this event.
But with Taylor’s star power and what she has accomplished, there seems to be more traction from behind the scenes to make this a reality.
Speaking to RTE Sport, Taylor has stated:
“We are still trying to figure the details out, but I do have one more fight this year,”.
“It is kind of like my retirement fight. It has been an amazing journey, the whole lot of it, over these last 20 years”.
“That’s what we’re hoping and preparing for, to have one last fight. It is going to be an amazing celebration.”
“I just want to fight in Dublin to end my career. Obviously we are still hoping for Croke Park, hanging on to a bit of hope that it can happen”.
“Fighting my last fight in our most iconic arena, how special would that be? I think it would be absolutely remarkable if I was able to do that. I’m not sure if it is going to happen or not.
“Either way, I’ll be ending my career here and I’m very, very excited about that.”
Details will follow in the coming weeks, but one thing is for sure is there are few that deserve this opportunity more than Ireland’s finest.
