Former unified champion set to face British undisputed title challenger.
When Jose Ramirez last fought, he lost by unanimous decision to Devin Haney. This fight had the fourth-fewest amount of punches landed in a professional boxing match at the time, and it remains an all-time low in CompuBox history.
Before that fight, Ramirez lost another unanimous decision to Arnold Barboza Jr. So, following the Haney fight, he had lost twice in a row.
This is so far removed from what Ramirez once was.
In 2018, Ramirez became the WBC super-lightweight champion by beating Amir Imam. He defended this title twice against Antonio Orozco and Jose Zepeda, then won the WBO title to become unified champion by stopping Maurice Hooker.
After a defence of his two belts against Viktor Postol, Ramirez took on Josh Taylor, the undefeated Scotsman who held the WBA and IBF titles.
Ramirez would get dropped twice and lost by unanimous decision, having his belts and undefeated record taken from him.
Since his challenge for undisputed, Ramirez has gone 3-2 and has increasingly looked like a depleted fighter, a lesser version of himself.
The same was true of Josh Taylor, who chose to fight Jack Catterall in his first undisputed title defence. Taylor would get knocked down and seemingly convincingly outboxed.
The resulting decision in favour of Taylor has been derided as one of the most egregious displays of judging in the last few years, but that fight would be the last official win of Taylor’s career. He would go on a three-fight winless run, including a rematch defeat to Catterall.
Catterall himself put together four wins after the first Taylor fight, then dropped an extremely close decision to Arnold Barboza Jr. He regrouped with a move up in weight and a win over Harlem Eubank, suffering a nasty gash above the eye in the process.
With some criticising his technical style, Catterall chose to team up with Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis to enhance his aggression. This seemed to pay dividends, as Catterall would end up stopping the tough Ekow Essuman (who was coming off a win over Josh Taylor) to record his first inside-the-distance win in over six years.
And it now seems that the two former Taylor and Barboza opponents are set to square off against each other, as it has been reported by BoxingScene that Jack Catterall (32-2, 14 KOs) and Jose Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs) are due to battle it out on the 30th of May in Fresno, California, United States.
The two former super-lightweights who fought at the world level share quite a bit in common, though some have questioned whether this matchup is perhaps coming later than it ideally should be.
Whether it is or isn’t, a win would put either in a very favourable position.
