Cordina charged with assault.
Not so long ago, Joe Cordina was the undefeated two-time IBF super-featherweight champion of the world. He was considered one of the very best fighters in Britain and one of the best in his division.
Things went wrong when the Welshman took on Anthony Cacace on the undercard of the first showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
On that night, Cordina was dropped and stopped for the first time in his career, losing his title in the process.
He would be out of the ring for almost 14 months before returning in July of last year to defeat Mexico’s Jaret González Quiroz in his debut at lightweight.
In December of the same year, Cordina made another debut, this time over in America. In doing so, he convincingly outboxed the tough Gabriel Flores Jr.
Being a WBO final eliminator, this win made the Welsh fighter the mandatory challenger to WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason, a fight that was made official for Independence Day.
However, news arrived yesterday that Cordina had been forced to pull out of the fight due to visa issues, scuppering his opportunity to become a two-weight champion.
The reasoning behind this was not clear at first, but the truth of the matter has now come to light.
Cordina has been charged with “assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place”, according to South Wales Police.
This stems from an incident that took place on the 27th of February outside of Pentwyn Service Station on Pentwyn Road in Cardiff, Wales.
The authorities have confirmed that another individual connected to the incident–one 32-year-old Jamie O’Brien–has also been charged with assault.
Cordina is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on the 7th of July.
