Jermall Charlo pleads guilty to two criminal charges

Charlo pleads guilty to two criminal charges in court.

Many fans consider Jermall Charlo to have had one of the most frustrating careers of any current boxer. The former IBF super-welterweight and WBC middleweight champion of the world, the American has suffered from several bouts of inactivity since a 2021 title defence over Juan Macias Montiel.

Charlo would not fight again until late 2023, at which point he was no longer champion. That return saw him beat Jose Benavidez Jr., after which he next fought in May of 2025 (a stoppage of Thomas LaManna).

That was his most recent appearance. Now over a year ago, Charlo was scheduled to feature on the David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez undercard against Armando Reséndiz, who was then the WBA super-middleweight champion.

That fight ended up falling apart at the last minute, and now Charlo is set for a slot on the Tim Tszyu vs. Errol Spence Jr. undercard next month, with his opponent yet to be confirmed.

But ahead of that, the unbeaten pugilist has appeared in court to plead guilty to an incident that took place on the 6th of May, 2024.

On that date, he got into a car crash involving another vehicle while driving his red Lamborghini in Pearland, Texas. Officers at the Pearland Police Department claimed that after catching up to Charlo shortly after, he appeared to be intoxicated.

A mugshot taken after the former two-division titleholder was detained seemed to depict him bloodshot eyes.

Earlier today, Charlo pleaded guilty to one count of driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration greater than or equal to .15 and one count of collision involving damage to a vehicle greater than or equal to $200, according to court records.

For his actions, he was sentenced to three days in county jail, was ordered to pay “a fine of $1,011 and all court costs”, and had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days.
