Boxers who featured in Super Bowl halftime show have been named.
Bad Bunny’s performance during the Super Bowl LX halftime show has been met with mixed reactions. Featuring strong political themes, it has caused a buzz online and drawn comments from a number of famous figures.
Jake Paul voiced his disapproval of the performance on his Twitter (or ‘X’) profile, something that itself attracted a lot of attention of a divided air.
The performance lasted for 13 minutes, and it featured strong references to history and Puerto Rican culture and heritage. Bad Bunny (real name being Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) is a proud Puerto Rican, and his show was strongly built upon a foundation of Hispanic pride.
At the midpoint of the show, two young boxers were seen playfully throwing punches at each other in a sugar cane field while Bad Bunny made his way between them.
The two pugilists featured are Xander Zayas and Emiliano Vargas.
Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) is the unified WBA and WBO super-welterweight world champion, having recently become the youngest two-belt champion in the sport at the age of 23. Like Bad Bunny, he is Puerto Rican, and he serves as probably the best active representative of the island in the sweet science. In the men’s side of the sport, at least.
Vargas (16-0, 13 KOs), meanwhile, is not a world champion, but is a very well-regarded super-lightweight contender. While he is American, he is of Mexican heritage. His father, Fernando Vargas, was a two-time super-welterweight world champion and fought several big names, including Felix Trinidad, one of the best Puerto Rican boxers of all time.
Trinidad’s fight with Vargas would turn out to be an absolute war, with Vargas recovering from two first-round knockdowns to drop Trinidad in the fourth round before ultimately being stopped in the very last frame.
However much the performance raises the profile of both boxers is unclear, but it is nice to see boxing on a big stage, with Bad Bunny being a big fan of the sport that his homeland has represented so well over the years.
