House of Representatives passes Ali Revival Act

Ali Revival Act is passed by House of Representatives.

The Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act passed through the United States House of Representatives on a 30-4 vote earlier today.

Chief among the aims of the Ali Revival Act is the formation of Unified Boxing Organisations (UBOs), alternatives to the currently recognised sanctioning bodies that create their own ranking system and have their own set of world champions.

The Ali Revival Act also seeks to provide a uniform minimum payment of $200 per round, enhance the standard of medical practices in the sport, and strengthen ringside safety.

In addition, the act provides for further transparency with a third-party anti-doping program and enforces a strict policy on betting on fights.

Ultimately, the act exists to improve opportunity and protection for fighters, as well as reinforce the integrity of boxing as a whole.

The Ali Revival Act adds certain conditions to the Professional Boxing Safety Act of 1996, which was enhanced by the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act that went into effect in 2000.

The Ali Reform Act was centred around reforming unfair practices in the sport with the intention of avoiding conflicts of interest between parties.

The passing of the Ali Revival Act could potentially mean big things for Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing league, which intends to introduce its own titles and rankings in place of the ones that come under the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF.

Should Zuffa operate as a UBO, it would be able to function in a very similar way to the UFC, which Dana White is the boss of.

Zuffa has already caused some division in the world of boxing, and the IBF recently chose to strip Jai Opetaia of their cruiserweight title following his recent victory for the Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight championship.

The Ali Revival Act will now go to the United States Senate for a secondary round of approval.
