Oscar De La Hoya sues manager of Vergil Ortiz

Golden Boy Promotions have filed a lawsuit against the manager of Vergil Ortiz Jr over alleged breaches of contract.

Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya have filed a lawsuit against Rick Mirigian, the manager of Vergil Ortiz Jr for a number of breaches of contract.

Vergil Ortiz Jr (24-0, 22ko’s) is one of Golden Boy Promotions flagship fighters.

The Texas born light middleweight is the WBC interim champion, and is ranked as the number one fighter in the division by the Ring Magazine.

Ortiz is on an impressive run of victories, defeating Serhii Bohachuk, Israil Madrimov, and Erickson Lubin consecutively.

Vergil Ortiz has been called to fight Jaron Ennis in a fight that is one of the best to make in the sport.

Both Ennis and Ortiz are two of American boxing’s highest level operators, and with both fighters fighting on DAZN, fans are still hopeful that negotiations can be finalised.

Jaron Ennis, the former unified welterweight champion, is signed to Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn.

Hearn has been calling for this fight for a long time now and has claimed that him and Ennis had already agreed to the fight with DAZN.

The problems in team Ortiz have put this fight in risk of not materialising.

The lawsuit states: “Unfortunately, Mirigian has embarked on a campaign of self-promotion … in an effort to ingratiate himself with the newest player in the boxing world – Dana White … and Zuffa,”

“In a transparent effort to curry favor with Zuffa, Mirigian has deliberately and willfully interfered with Golden Boy’s contracts for his own personal interest. … He is acting for himself only.”

The lawsuit claims that Golden Boy “signed Ortiz to a three-year deal in August 2024, when he won the WBC interim belt by defeating Serhii Bohachuk, clinching the right to exclusively negotiate all of Ortiz’s boxing activities and matches.”

With Golden Boy’s renewal with broadcaster DAZN now up in the air due to this scenario, Golden Boy seeks injunctive relief to stop the alleged interference and disclosed it is in danger of having its 2026-2027 license fee from DAZN reduced because of this dispute.
