Golden Boy issues cease-and-desist letter to Zuffa.
When Dana White kickstarted his Zuffa Boxing project earlier this year and set out to achieve the vision he had previously presented for the sport, everyone knew that he would inevitably make some enemies in the process.
Quite simply, that is the effect that Zuffa’s disregarding of the sanctioning bodies was always going to have. And in his brief time in the game, White has already had feuds with almost every major boxing promoter.
Queensberry Promotions boss Frank Warren filed a lawsuit against Sela and TKO over the forming of Zuffa a few months ago, Ben Shalom’s Boxxer launched legal action against Zuffa over allegedly signing fighters that still had bouts on their contracts just last week, and White has engaged in online verbals with both Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya.
And in the latest news, Zuffa has now had a cease-and-desist letter issued to them by De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions company.
The letter (also addressed to TKO, Paramount, and Sela) was issued with the purpose of telling all named parties to stop their alleged interference with Ryan Garcia regarding a planned WBC welterweight title fight with Conor Benn.
Reportedly, Zuffa was set to announce the bout on the UFC 328 event from the White House this Sunday, yet (according to the letter) Garcia has an obligation to have his fights streamed on DAZN and not Paramount+ (Zuffa’s streaming partner).
In addition, Ricardo P. Cestero (De La Hoya’s attorney) states in the letter (reviewed by BoxingScene), “Golden Boy has not approved of or agreed to the terms of any such [Benn] bout, nor has Golden Boy been involved in the negotiations of any such bout.”
This certainly complicates matters, especially since Garcia vs. Benn was apparently so close to being announced. Ultimately, it is just yet another thing on Zuffa’s plate.
