Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez defends his WBA and WBO cruiserweight world titles this Saturday against David Benavidez
Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
What better way to commemorate this with a cruiserweight unification bout in Las Vegas between two boxing greats with Mexican descent.
May 2nd provides David Benavidez with the opportunity of becoming a three weight world champion at 29 years old.
In his way is a man that has only lost to pound for pound great Dmitry Bivol (24-1, 12ko’s).
For so long fight fans wanted Jai Opetaia vs Zurdo Ramirez to see who the number one cruiserweight is.
With the Australian signing with Zuffa, this is undoubtedly the next best fight for the recognised world titles.
It’s southpaw vs orthodox, it’s one of the biggest fights in the U.S boxing schedule, and it’s got an undercard to suffice.
Jose Armando Resendiz vs Jaime Munguia is the co-main, with Oscar Duarte also returning.
Will it be the pressure and volume punching of the challenger Benavidez, or will the established cruiserweight prove all too big at a weight Zurdo has been at for 3 years?
Whilst the Mexican has huge desires of being victorious this weekend, retirement seems to also be on the mind of the 34 year old.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Zurdo has stated:
“I think 1 or 2 more (fights) and then it’s done for Zurdo Ramirez. I been in this sport for a long time, this is my legacy. I want to continue but I don’t know about the future.”
Headlining on PPV this weekend, it is likely to be a career high payday for Zurdo, certainly setting himself up financially for the future.
A move to heavyweight to close the curtain on a marvellous career is also not out of the window for Ramirez, win or lose on Saturday.
