Ramirez speaks on loss to Benavidez.
On the 2nd of May, boxing fans were treated to an absolute banquet of pugilistic action that saw some high-level performances and rip-roaring action.
Two of the major cards that day saw Naoya Inoue and David Benavidez do their thing, emerging victorious from their fights with the belts to prove it.
In the case of Benavidez, his 6th-round stoppage of Gilberto Ramirez was impressive for a number of reasons. Firstly, Benavidez was making his cruiserweight debut against the unified champion, and it was perceived as an even affair going in.
Also, Ramirez’s only previous loss was a decision to Dmitry Bivol, making it even more impressive that Benavidez wrecked the Mexican so thoroughly.
And after his encounter with the lauded American, Ramirez remained silent for a short while, but then took to social media to share his thoughts.
“Saturday didn’t go the way I planned”, Ramirez wrote on Instagram. “The loss is painful. The hurt is real. But I’ll sit with it, learn from it, and come back stronger. This is not the end….
“No excuses. I tip my hat to David for being the fighter he was that night. His success didn’t come overnight, and that only motivates me more. Don’t discredit what he brought. He was the better man that night, and I have nothing but respect for him and his team for the preparation they put in. Elbow or no elbow, it’s a fight at the end of the night.”
Ramirez went on to say that he will be back and that if he were to share the ring with Benavidez again, he would be better prepared and would gain his revenge. His post concluded with, “The comeback is coming.”
