Gervonta Davis ordered to defend against unbeaten contender.
Not so long ago–quite recently, if truth be told–Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis was considered one of the most explosive, powerful, and exciting fighters in all of world boxing.
The American was thought by many to be the best lightweight in the sport, and he consistently provided excitement in each one of his fights.
He could be getting outboxed, he could be losing, but it was almost a definite that he would land on you at some point. And when he did, your legs would forget that they were ever there to begin with.
That’s how it went for a while, at least, but then Davis ran into Lamont Roach Jr.
In March of last year, Davis drew with his fellow American, a result that was only prevented from being Davis’s first loss due to the referee controversially not calling a knockdown after he voluntary took a knee.
It wasn’t a surprise for many that Davis faced difficulty, but round after round, it became clear that his opponent was one Roach he could not exterminate.
Since then, Davis has had an exhibition match with Jake Paul fall through due to one of many run-ins with the law and hasn’t fought in any capacity since the Roach bout.
Because of this, Davis was made champion-in-recess by the WBA. However, the organisation has now ordered him to defend his title against Floyd Schofield.
Schofield is a 23-year-old lightweight contender who is unbeaten in 19 fights. Last appearing almost a year ago, he impressively recorded a first-round win over Tevin Farmer, who had gone a combined 32 rounds with William Zepeda and Raymond Muratalla across his previous three fights.
Should Davis vs. Schofield take place, it would be a fascinating meeting of two top 135-pound fighters at different stages of their careers, but it all remains on whether or not Davis can actually make his return to the ring.
