Liddard has a potential future opponent in a powerful Scotsman.
George Liddard is Britain’s best young middleweight contender. At just 23, “The Billericay Bomber” is the British and Commonwealth champion and has beaten established and experienced opponents like Kieron Conway and Tyler Denny.
It was the Denny win that served as Liddard’s latest ring appearance, with the Essex man trading leather with the former European champion to claim a unanimous decision just under a month ago.
Being so talented at such a young age means that as soon as Liddard has won a fight, all conversation will instantly go towards who will provide him with his next test, but maybe it’s time for him to provide someone with a test.
Aston Brown is undefeated in nine fights, and he will look to make it ten when he faces Sam Gilley on the Nathaniel Collins vs. Cristobal Lorente 2 undercard on Friday.
Gilley is a former Southern Area welterweight champion and also held the English and Commonwealth straps at super-welterweight. Against Brown, he will be making his middleweight debut.
At 18-2-1, Gilley’s number of wins is double Brown’s number of fights, giving him a vast experience advantage as a professional. And with Gilley’s aggressive, all-action style, it is a dangerous fight for a nine-fight professional to take.
However, there is good reason for Brown to be taking such a fight at this stage. You see, at 35 years old, he has no time to waste. And if he is to get the big opportunities, he must get them now.
If you’ve seen any of Brown’s last three fights, you will know why his contest against Gilley is probably the most anticipated fight on Friday’s bill.
Against the 9-0 Fearghus Quinn, Brown needed just two rounds to get the job done. He needed only one round to dispatch of the 5-0 Reece Porter, picking up the Scottish Area title along the way.
When last seen, Brown took just two rounds to get rid of the 19-4 Paul Kean, a man who lasted six rounds with Hamzah Sheeraz and Louis Greene.
Brown packs a venomous wallop with every throw of his fists.
The Kean victory won Brown the Celtic title, but should he win his upcoming fight with Gilley, the Glasgow man could be looking at an exciting showdown for George Liddard’s British and Commonwealth trinkets.
Earlier today, during the final press conference for the Collins-Lorente rematch, Brown was asked by a member of the press if a fight with Liddard interested him.
While saying that he is fully focused on fighting on Friday, Brown did state, “If the George Liddard fight came in the future, so be it, know what I mean? But me and the big man [Sam Gilley] are goin’ for it on Friday night. It’ll be an absolute cracker.”
