Galal Yafai unification world title fight postponed

Galal Yafai vs Ricardo Sandoval for the unified WBA and WBC world flyweight titles has officially been postponed due to injury.

Galal Yafai was initially set to challenge Ricardo Sandoval for the unified WBC and WBA world flyweight titles as the co-main event to Dalton Smith vs Alberto Puello.

However, the Sheffield born WBC super-lightweight world champion Dalton Smith pulled out with an injury, elevating Yafai to main event.

Remarkably, it’s history repeating itself for Matchroom Boxing, and lightning strikes twice.

Galal Yafai has sustained an injury during his training camp, and the title clash with Ricardo Sandoval has now been postponed.

The event on Saturday, June 6 at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena will go ahead as scheduled.

Josh Padley will defend his EBU super bantamweight title against Aqib Fiaz in the main event.

Standout Matchroom talents Leo Atang, Connor Mitchell and Adam Maca are all featuring on the card.

Undoubtedly, this is now an event that will come with significant financial implications for Matchroom.

To keep the show on highlights the long-term investments Eddie Hearn is putting in these future stars, as this activity is vital for their development.

A date in September is the target for the rescheduling of Dalton Smith vs Alberto Puello for the WBC super lightweight title.

What isn’t known is the extent of the injury for Yafai, and whether this date will come too soon for the Olympic Gold Medallist.

June 6 was set to end just under a year of inactivity for Yafai, after he shared the ring with someone now serving a ban for use of performance enhancing drugs.

It was a brutal 12 rounds that saw Yafai on the canvas.

Whilst rightfully the decision was changed to a no contest, it is still unknown what that took out of Yafai both physically and mentally.
