Warren reveals thoughts on Fury vs. Joshua being in the U.S.
When it comes to the long-discussed bout between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, it appears that there is only one thing stopping it from being made official, and that is the location.
Indeed, while it first seemed a given to take place in the United Kingdom, that is no longer as certain as it once was. In fact, the leading location where it will likely be staged is actually across the pond.
For a few reasons, the United States is indeed the frontrunner to host the bout, something that has frustrated many across the boxing world, and not just those from Britain.
The exact venue is strongly rumoured to be Madison Square Garden, the iconic “Mecca of Boxing” that has seen so many of the sport’s biggest events occur within the confines of its structure.
While this would certainly make sense for an American bout, Fury and Joshua are both Britons, and fans would prefer the matchup to take place at Wembley Stadium, a fitting setting for the all-U.K. affair.
Eddie Hearn–Joshua’s promoter at Matchroom Boxing–has openly voiced his displeasure at the fight possibly being in the U.S., stating recently that the fight will not take place if it is made official for New York.
As for Frank Warren–Fury’s promoter at Queensberry Promotions–he has now also weighed in on the matter.
“I think it’d be disappointing, obviously, for the British fans. But havin’ said that, the fight’s on”, Warren stated to iFL TV. “You know what I mean? It’s on. And if it’s in the U.K, great. But [if] it’s not, it means–you know–90,000 people who see it live won’t see it live in the U.K., but the millions that will watch it on TV will still see it on TV.”
And so, the promoters of the respective fighters both understand that the situation isn’t ideal. So, from here, we will just have to see what happens.
