Queensberry boss reveals plans for Itauma after Hrgovic defeat.
Moses Itauma came up short against Filip Hrgovic this Saturday, being stopped in the 9th round of a fight he had been winning handily after punching himself out.
As a result, the vacant IBF heavyweight title on the line would end up in the hands of his foe on the night, and the 21-year-old Englishman suffered the first setback of his young career.
Immediately, many people in the sport reacted to his defeat and the circumstances surrounding it, with a lot of fans highlighting how suddenly Itauma seemed run out of energy after going beyond six rounds for the very first time.
Frank Warren (Itauma’s promoter at Queensberry Promotions) has now stated what the next plans for his young fighter will be and where they will go from here.
“He’s sayin’ to me, ‘Can we get the rematch on?’–you know?–which is a natural reaction”, Warren told talkSPORT Boxing. “But … I said, ‘You’ve gotta just switch off from boxin’, just go and chill out, go and spend some time with your family, and then come back, recharge your batteries, and then we’ll get to work again.
‘The landscape is what it is. You’re a big part of it. You’ve shown you belong at that level.’ And provided we learn–he learns–the lessons from the fight, I think he can go on and do some great things.”
Continuing, Warren added, “I would like to see him in at least one–maybe two–fights and see where we go before we go [back to that level].”
The Queensberry boss ultimately stated that the matter is something that he and Itauma’s team will all have to sit down and discuss at some point.
