Frank Warren speaks on Dubois’s next potential fight.
On Saturday, Daniel Dubois stopped Fabio Wardley to become the WBO heavyweight champion, the second time he has held a major world title.
Dubois outdid the expectations of many on the night, rising from two knockdowns to halt the steel-jawed Wardley, who never did go down despite some terrific punishment.
It was expected by a number of personalities across the boxing fraternity that Wardley’s will would prove the difference in the fight, but that isn’t what happened.
Such was the nature of the encounter that a rematch would be welcomed by anyone, and Frank Warren (promoter of both Wardley and Dubois) has stated what will likely occur next for the two heavyweights.
On the subject of a rematch, Warren told Sky Sports, “It’s in the contract. If Fabio wants to do it, he can call it on. He was in a tough battle, as was Daniel. They’ve got to rest up now, forget about boxing for a while.”
Regarding when a possible rematch could take place, Warren said, “If it happens, it won’t happen ’til the end of the year. Whatever happens with Daniel, he’ll fight sometime–I think–in November. He needs to recuperate himself. It’ll be the same for Fabio.
“It could be next year. It was such a tough fight for both of them. Such a tough fight. We’ll see. Time will tell.”
And discussing Dubois possibly fighting Moses Itauma (Dubois’s mandatory challenger), Warren stated, “At some point, they will be [on a collision course]. A massive, massive, massive fight. But if we start heading towards the end of the year, my concern is that them two would fill Wembley [Stadium] up. We’re not going to be doing a Wembley fight in late November-early December.
“It’s like the fight on Saturday. If that happens next year, they’re guys in their prime.”
Both Wardley and Dubois are likely only to appear in more entertaining fights from here on out. So, whoever they end up facing next, we are guaranteed some great action.
