Former Oleksandr Usyk opponent has huge fight lined up

Usyk opponent to potentially have big fight.

Oleksandr Usyk is undoubtedly on the last legs of his career, having recently given up his unified heavyweight world championship and revealed that his final fight is nigh.

Whoever his last bout will be against, Usyk is the type of fighter boxing does not see very often. His accolades, achievements, and wins across both his amateur and professional career entirely speak for themselves.

For a while, it was thought that even time wasn’t slowing him down. Only, it was in May that that idea was seriously put to the test when Usyk faced Rico Verhoeven, a career kickboxer who had had only one professional boxing match.

In that fight, Usyk struggled greatly, being convincingly down on the cards in the eyes of most observers before ultimately winning by controversial stoppage.

As a result, it was in the opinion of many that Father Time had finally come knocking. And following the fight (which many had predicted would not be competitive in the least), people were calling for the two to rematch.

However, it looks like that will most probably not be taking place, with Deontay Wilder considered Usyk’s most likely last opponent.

However, with Verhoeven receiving a world ranking with both the WBC and WBA, he is in line to take part in some big fights. Though a surprising opponent has now entered the conversation.

In an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, former UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem was asked if a fight with Verhoeven will be happening and what sport it will take place in if it does.

“Well, if it’s up to me, we are gonna see that fight, and it’s gonna be in a boxin’ ring”, Overeem stated. “I don’t know, [it could take place in] Amsterdam Arena [Johan Cruyff Arena]. We’ve got a 60,000-seater there. Let’s go.”

Should the two Dutchman let fists fly, it will surely attract eyes in the Netherlands.
