Former Irish boxing team captain has been jailed after knife attack.
25-year-old Mary Nevin has pleaded guilty to acting out a violent and unprovoked knife attack on 22-year-old Mary-Kate Nevin, her second cousin.
The incident occurred on the 3rd of May, 2024, near the attacker’s home on Austin Friars Street in the town of County Westmeath, Ireland.
In the frenzied attack, the victim was stabbed 12 times in the shoulder and both arms, leaving her with catastrophic injuries that resulted in a five-hour emergency surgery, plastic surgery, and two blood transfusions.
She has now lost all movement in her left arm and hand, preventing her from returning to work in her lifelong goal as a hairdresser and performing daily tasks by herself.
As a result, the victim has suffered from PTSD, depression, nightmares, and flashbacks, and she now barely leaves the house. Speaking on how it has impacted her, she stated, “I’m a quarter the person I was.”
Mary Nevin, who has reportedly laughed at the victim about the situation since, stated, “I want to apologise from the bottom of my heart.”
She also offered €5,000 as a token of her remorse to her cousin, but this was denied, and it will instead go to a local community initiative.
The attack is believed to be connected to a dispute over a drug debt of €40 that flared up over social media, yet the victim had no involvement in this feud.
The event unfolded when Mary-Kate Nevin was walking along Austin Friars Street with her partner when the attacker opened her door and asked her to come inside multiple times.
The victim refused, saying she didn’t want any trouble and barely knew the attacker, having only met her on a single occasion.
Mary Nevin told her, “I’ll slit your f**ing throat, you ugly tramp”, then promptly ran at her and struck her in the face. From there, a struggle ensued that led to the knife attack.
The attacker is a former elite Irish boxing team captain who represented Ireland internationally. She was sentenced to 9 years, with the last three suspended on the condition that she does not reoffend for 7 years and complies with probation supervision.
