The Australian has verbally agreed to face the American in 2027.
Jai Opetaia dethroned WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian in their showdown last weekend in Las Vegas.
As their contest was not sanctioned by the WBC, Opetaia left the States without the gold and green strap.
Michal Cieslak has since been elevated and ordered to face David Benavidez next.
Following their clash later this year, Opetaia is expected to meet the winner in the ring.
If Benavidez wins, he could defend all three titles against former IBF champion and current Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight champion Opetaia.
Regardless of the belts, it is one of boxing’s best potential fights, with both men seemingly keen to make it happen next year.
Former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew gave his thoughts on their matchup during the DAZN broadcast in Las Vegas: “There are ways both could win the fight, but I edge towards Benavidez.
“I just think he does not stop. He’s the only [cruiserweight] that can match Jai Opetaia’s relentlessness.
“He can take it to another level … Iron sharpens iron; I can’t wait to see this fight.”
Benavidez previously held major titles at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight.
But he became a three-division world champion by dethroning Gilberto Ramirez with a sixth-round stoppage in May.
