Former Joshua trainer turned down offer for documentary on the British star.
Last week, Anthony Joshua’s career was hanging by a thread after the first round of his comeback fight against Kristian Prenga had concluded. Dropped twice in that frame, it appeared the Englishman was set for a defeat that would have been incredibly problematic for a planned bout with Tyson Fury in November.
As it happened, Joshua came back in the second round to flatten Prenga and leave him halfway out of the ring. Despite the performance as a whole, the Briton’s finishing instincts were on full display.
Though it was, of course, his overall showing that became the main talking point, with Prenga being a massive underdog going in who wasn’t given much of a chance by most fans.
It has left plenty wondering if “AJ” should really continue fighting. One of these people is Robert Garcia, the former world champion and current trainer who was in the Englishman’s corner for his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.
On yesterday’s episode of BoxingScene Today, Garcia stated, “They [Netflix] wanted to fly me to London so I could sit down for a couple of days and talk to them about the months that I spent with him [Joshua].
“I denied that. They actually told me they would fly down to California. I denied it because I don’t want to be part of this, because I’m not gonna lie, either. I’m not gonna lie to nobody.
“I’d rather stay quiet, because at the end, honestly … we were cheering for him to win [against Prenga] because we want to see him against Fury, and that’s the fight that’s happening.”
Speaking on the Fury fight, Garcia said, “Fury is also maybe not as young [as he was], but yeah, two dangerous guys. I still want to see it. It’s a competitive fight. I think it’s gonna be a good fight.
“But sometimes, cheering for this guy [Joshua] to get up and pull off the win, sometimes, it’s dangerous with what’s coming after that.”
