Footage released of sparring session that turned ugly.
Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is the former WBA super-lightweight champion and current WBA welterweight champion. It is the strap he presently holds that he will be defending against Teofimo Lopez next month.
It will be his first appearance back in the ring since an upset decision victory over Ryan Garcia last year and will give Romero his second opportunity to successfully retain a world title.
His previous reign as champion came after winning a vacant strap in a very controversial stoppage over Ismael Barroso three years ago. In his very next fight, Romero lost his belt in an 8th-round TKO to Isaac Cruz.
All in all, it has been quite an up-and-down career for the American, who also faced defeat at the hands of Gervonta Davis four years ago.
Either way, when he faces fellow former two-weight world champion Lopez in August, Romero will be hoping that his foe won’t be a three-weight world champion by night’s end.
In order to do this, he will be putting in the work by training and sparring. And ahead of his big fight, footage has emerged of a sparring session involving Romero that ended up turning pretty ugly.
In the video, the current titleholder is seen being hit by a dirty move from a sparring partner, who Romero then throws to the floor.
From there, the unidentified sparring partner becomes the recipient of a set of punches while still down before he and Romero are broken up.
It is currently unclear exactly when the footage was filmed, but following its recent circulation, it has attracted attention online.
