Fighter on Lester Martinez undercard released from hospital

American teenager released from hospital following injuries sustained in fight.

Last Saturday saw ProBox TV stage the WBC interim super-middleweight showdown between Lester Martínez and Immanuwel Aleem.

Unbeaten slugger Martínez became the first boxer from Guatemala to win any form of alphabet title in history, opening the door to a fiery rematch with WBC champion Christian Mbilli.

While the main event provided that historical accomplishment, the undercard also saw some very memorable performances from a series of promising prospects.

The undercard would end up outshining the headliner, but for a very melancholy reason.

A super-strawweight bout between undefeated Jocelyn Camarillo and three-bout fighter Isis Sio ended in a very unfortunate manner when Sio fell beneath a salvo of thunderous shots from Camarillo in the first round.

As the referee began to count Sio, who was facedown on the canvas, it became clear very quickly that the 19-year-old was not going to rise. The count was promptly waved.

Shortly after, Sio was swiftly transported to the intensive care unit of Loma Linda University Medical Centre, where she was placed into a medically induced coma.

The situation looked to be very serious, but it was recently revealed that Sio had awoken and was starting to speak. In addition, she was taken off her ventilator and began breathing on her own.

Now there has been some even more fortunate news, as it has been revealed that Isis Sio has been discharged from hospital.

While this is undoubtedly the best possible outcome, there are still many questions from people who are wondering why Sio was allowed to fight in the first place, given that the teenager was barely two months removed from a separate first-round knockout defeat.

With hope, this will improve the quality of the screening surrounding boxers being cleared to fight and prevent similar instances from occurring in the future.
