Fighter on Lester Martinez undercard in medically induced coma

The ProBox event has been overshadowed by tragic undercard fight.

On Saturday, ProBox TV put on its latest card at the Orange Show Events Centre in San Bernardino, California, United States.

The main event saw Lester Martínez return for the first time since his titanic rumble with Christian Mbilli in September.

The Guatemalan scored a dominant triumph over America’s Immanuwel Aleem to claim the WBC interim super-middleweight title, becoming the first man in his country’s history to win any form of alphabet strap.

Other action on the bill saw unbeaten super-welterweight Joshua Kevin Anton pull off a first-round win over Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, while California featherweight Albert Gonzalez scored his own first-round win over Brandon Chambers.

However, one bout in particular overshadowed all else on the show for a very unfortunate reason.

Undefeated female super-strawweight Jocelyn Camarillo fought the 1-2 Isis Sio, who ended up on the receiving end of a frenzy of punches from Camarillo that left her prostrate on the canvas.

Such was the nature of the scene that the referee waved the count very shortly after starting it, but the full extent of the events would only become clear later.

After being rushed to the hospital, Sio was placed in a medically induced coma, and she remains in the intensive care unit of Loma Linda University Medical Centre.

The 19-year-old was returning from a separate first-round knockout loss just this January, and concerns have been raised over why she was allowed to enter the ring against an opponent such as Camarillo.

Both Camarillo and ProBox CEO Garry Jonas have made statements on the situation, providing their well wishes for the teenager from North Dakota.

We hope Isis Sio makes a quick and full recovery following the events of Saturday night’s bout.
