Fight upgraded to world title eliminator on Derek Chisora vs. Deontay Wilder undercard

Undercard fight will have bigger implications on the line.

The fight between Derek Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) and Deontay Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs) is one of the most interesting on the upcoming boxing calendar.

It is the 50th fight for both men, who are each veterans at similar stages of their careers, but are in the middle of vastly different runs of form.

Wilder is 2-4 in his last six, while Chisora is 4-2 in his last six. While Wilder’s paper record is vastly better, the difference is that Chisora has never been unbeaten. All of Wilder’s losses have come in the last six years, but Chisora has been accumulating losses since 2011.

It is clear that Chisora is the one between them who can deal with losing far better, and it is something he has fought on in spite of over the years.

Wilder, on the other hand, went 42-0-1 before officially losing his first fight. And upon his first loss, Wilder famously came out with inmumerable excuses to try and explain why it happened.

But apart from the fight between the two itself, the undercard for their showdown has plenty of great action. This includes Denzel Bentley’s long-awaited match with Endry Saavedra for the WBO interim middleweight title.

But another intriguing contest is Viddal Riley’s fight with Mateusz Masternak, the experienced European cruiserweight champion.

Following Jai Opetaia’s move to Zuffa Boxing, his status as IBF champion has become a subject of discussion, and Riley-Masternak has now been made an eliminator for the IBF championship.

Should Opetaia ultimately be stripped of his belt, it is highly likely an all-British clash between Riley and Chris Billam-Smith will be made for the vacant IBF title–should Riley come through Masternak, of course–given that Billam-Smith is the highest-ranked contender with the organisation.

Whatever the case, this represents a big opportunity for Riley, who is regarded as one of the best British cruiserweights in the world.
