Fabio Wardley has triggered an immediate rematch after losing via technical knockout to Daniel Dubois in a fight of the year contender.
It was a fight that left everyone speechless, and less than a week on, Fabio Wardley has his sights well and truly on revenge.
Daniel Dubois stopped Wardley in round 10 to become a two time heavyweight world champion, capturing the WBO crown.
The fight was billed as ‘don’t blink’, and the marketing team at Queensberry Promotions got it absolutely spot on.
It took Wardley less than 20 seconds to land big on Dubois, putting him on the canvas with a right hand to the top of the head.
Dubois responded in round two, showcasing his ramrod jab with the right hand right behind it.
A lot of the build up was hyper-fixated on Dubois durability, heart and desire when the going gets tough.
Many have labelled him a ‘quitter’ in the past, as he has seemed to save himself for another day in his defeats to Oleksandr Usyk and Joe Joyce.
In round 3, many thought these suspicions were to be proved correct as Dubois took a knee after a big right hand from the Ipswich man.
However, in hindsight, it was a mature decision from the South Londoner.
Dubois was up at the 8 count, and had recovered mentally.
From then on, the discrepancy in amateur pedigree stood out, and Dubois took over.
As the fight went on, more and more damage was inflicted on the face of Wardley.
Many have said the last couple of rounds were uncomfortable to watch, and that Wardley’s team should’ve pulled him out of there earlier.
Frank Warren revealed that the former champion has a rematch clause, and it appears that has been activated.
Wardley told Sky Sports: “The boxing world knows my character, and Saturday night proved that without a shred of doubt”.
“It was a fight for the ages, but I made some mistakes that I will rectify in the rematch”.
“Congratulations to Daniel, but I’m coming for you, and my belt!”
