Exclusive: Johnny Nelson responds to Prince Naseem Hamed “snake” comments

Johnny Nelson and Prince Naseem Hamed’s bitter feud continues.

Yesterday’s shock boxing beef was between two British boxing legends in Prince Naseem Hamed and Johnny Nelson.

One of Great Britain’s most iconic sports stars, Naseem Hamed was a unified featherweight world champion.

Him and Johnny Nelson were stablemates under the stewardship of Brendan Ingle, and both went on to have wonderful careers in the sport.

Johnny Nelson lost his first three fights as a professional.

What came next is truly remarkable.

The man from Sheffield then went on to capture British, European, WBC and WBO world titles.

Nelson has been a staple of the British boxing media since retirement, predominantly on Sky Sports.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Prince Naseem Hamed has verbally attacked his former stablemate.

Hamed stated: “Johnny wants publicity off my name”.

“I always realised, there was only ever one snake in that gym, and that was Johnny Nelson”.

In an exclusive interview with Boxing King Media, Johnny Nelson has responded to these comments.

Johnny Nelson stated: “He’s trying to say I owe my success to him, do I really?

“Or do I owe the opportunity to him, the success came from me and Brendan, he wasn;t around when I won my world title”.

“Frank [Warren] would not have done anything for nothing, he’s a businessman”.

“Nas said to me, Johnny I can get you a better deal, don’t sign the deal with Frank, I’ll get you a deal with Lou DiBella”.

“Lou had no idea who I was, Frank said to me, Johnny that’s your friend, to me that day I’m thinking Nas, what’s snakey?”.

“When he talks about being a snake, we can all talk about snakey things, and that’s gentle”.

“This is from my point of view, that’s what made my mind up, we were tight”.

“Whatever is going on with you and Brendan, don’t ruin me to get to him”.

“It just made me see a side I didn’t like”.

“I didn’t get personal, I didn’t call you any names”.

“Instead of addressing what I said, you do a character assassination”.

“Nas disrespected a man that’s in a grave, a man that cannot defend himself”.

“He’s one of the best fighters I’ve ever seen live, but I don’t this Nas now”.

“I feel ashamed”.

It’s sad to see two former world champions and British staples of boxing publicly falling out.

Whether a reconciliation is on the cards is yet to be seen.
