Former heavyweight champion’s trainer for Chisora fight revealed by manager.
Deontay Wilder is set to face Derek Chisora on the 4th of April. All numbers involved in the fight favour Wilder. He is 6’7″ to Chisora’s 6’1½”, his reach is 83 inches to Chisora’s 74, his record is 44-4-1 to Chisora’s 36-13, and he is 40 years old to Chisora’s 42.
Yet it is Chisora who is the betting favourite, and a large part of why that may be is probably because he has been on the better run of form, being 4-2 in his last six fights and putting together three consecutive wins in his last three appearances.
Wilder, meanwhile, is 2-4 in his last six, and he has generally looked like the one with more to prove between the two.
Boxing King Media spoke to Shelly Finkel, Deontay Wilder’s longtime manager, who has stated exclusively that Wilder’s trainer for the Chisora fight will be Don House.
Upon being asked if there was any consideration to return to Mark Breland (Wilder’s former trainer), Finkel answered in the negative.
Don House has trained multiple big names over the years, with Diego Corrales and Kevin Kelley both having trained under him. But most relevant is House being the trainer of Bermane Stiverne.
House was in Stiverne’s corner when Wilder fought him for the WBC heavyweight title in 2015. At that time, Wilder was 32-0 with 32 KOs, and Stiverne was the first person to take him the distance. This fight remains the only decision win of Wilder’s career.
In their rematch, Stiverne was decimated in the first round.
Wilder has switched trainers a few times. After having Mark Breland in his corner for the best years of his career, Wilder fired the former world champion following his first loss to Tyson Fury.
Breland was replaced by Malik Scott, also a former boxer who Wilder strangely fought himself and stopped in the first round. But after a string of losses under Scott, he was replaced by Don House, who trained Wilder for his comeback fight in June of 2025 against Tyrrel Herndon.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ will be hoping that Don House will be able to reignite the old fuse against the rough and ready rock-and-roller Chisora, and if he can, fans are in for something very explosive indeed.
