It was the second episode of Pro Project Promotions last weekend, and a former premier league star was on the end of a brutal first round defeat.
Merseyside was extremely busy this weekend.
It was kicked off by a Ben Whittaker (11-0-1, 8ko’s) first round knockout victory over Brian Suarez (21-5, 20ko’s).
Not only that, there was good wins for local stars Molly McCann (4-0, 1ko’s) and Joe McGrail (13-0, 6ko’s).
However, it was Sunday where things got really interesting.
Virgil Van Dijk scored a 100th minute winner to snatch city bragging rights from Everton in the first derby at The Hill Dickinson Stadium.
What followed was a charity boxing event including a whole host of former professional footballers.
The card was dubbed A Night To Remember II and featured plenty of ex-footballers.
Ex-Swansea star Lee Trundle was victorious over former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo.
The event was staged by Pro Project Promotions.
This company is run by ex-goalkeeper Graham Stack, who turned out for Arsenal, Leeds, Wolves and Plymouth Argyle during his career.
Former Premier League professional Lee McCormack by Matt Kilgallon, suggesting maybe the squared circle is not for him.
A left hook from Kilgallon put McCormack down close to a minute into the first round.
Despite this, McCormack told the SunSport previously that he had become “addicted” to his boxing training.
Whether the former Fulham and Leeds United star still carries that same sentiment is yet to be known.
Many footballers over the years have shared their passion for the sport of boxing, and it seems the two sports just go hand in hand in the UK.
From boxing events at football stadiums, to footballers lacing up the gloves, it will be a pattern that continues for years.
