Errol Spence Jr. to officially return in Australia

Errol Spence Jr.’s return fight officially announced.

It has been almost three years since Errol Spence Jr. was last seen in the ring. On that night, he stepped through the ropes as the unified welterweight champion and stepped out of them with his first professional defeat.

This defeat–at the brilliant hands of Terence Crawford–was not close or competitive. It has since been considered one of the most one-sided defeats at the elite level of the sport in history.

So convincing was the defeat that many felt it warranted Spence to walk away from boxing entirely, and while there was no official statement, it appeared for a while he might have done just that.

We did hear of negotiations with Sebastian Fundora that ultimately amounted to nothing, and rumours of a fight with Vergil Ortiz Jr. were essentially dead on arrival.

Then there were whispers of another fight, one that seemed far more believable.

Over time, these whispers grew louder. And suddenly, they were far more than just whispers.

Now they’ve spoken the fight into existence.

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Tim Tszyu is a fight that makes a lot of sense. Two gunslingers will be walking into the last-chance saloon, and whoever has more bullets left in the chamber shall be walking out of it as a man with a much clearer road ahead of him.

Tszyu suffered a loss under unfortunate circumstances to Sebastian Fundora, but his loss immediately after to Bakhram Murtazaliev was arguably worse than Spence’s loss to Crawford.

And while Tszyu would suffer a second defeat to Fundora, the thing that separates him from Spence is that we have seen him fight (and win) since the setbacks he has faced.

Can Spence do the same? Will he do the same? Is Tszyu the right opponent for him to do it against?

“The Truth” will come to light when the two square off in Australia on the 26th of July.
