American’s long-awaited comeback is official.
Errol Spence Jr. was once one of the best active fighters from the United States. He won three of four belts at welterweight, and his style was that of a whirling dervish, a perpetual motion machine, an infinitely charged battery pack.
And along came Terence Crawford.
Crawford did not simply beat Spence, you see. He mauled him, ravaged him, assailed him. In any other setting, it would have been grounds for an assault charge. In one night, we saw Spence go from one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world to a fighter who suddenly appeared broken and very badly hurt.
That fight took place on the 29th of July, 2023. Spence has not set foot in a boxing ring since, though that’s not for a lack of trying.
The likes of Sebastian Fundora and Vergil Ortiz Jr. have come up as potential opponents, but nothing has been for definite. And with each failed negotiation and breaking down of talks, Spence’s absence has grown longer and longer.
For a while, a lot of people thought that he would never box again.
But it appears he will.
It is now official that Errol Spence Jr. will be fighting again, and it will be against perhaps the only man who truly understands just what Spence has been through.
Tim Tszyu.
That’s right; it has now been confirmed that Spence and Tszyu are due to get it on in the summer, with Tszyu set for a tune-up in Australia beforehand.
Tszyu himself soared high before crashing down rapidly. A decision defeat to Sebastian Fundora was given much-needed context with a bad cut that impaired his vision, but it was much harder to explain the hammering he took from Bakhram Murtazaliev, four knockdowns and all.
A win over Joey Spencer built back some confidence, but a rematch defeat to Fundora followed in the very next fight. Tszyu did win in his most recent outing, but he has a lot left to prove.
As does Spence.
So, between Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) and Tim Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs), who has more to prove and who will actually prove it?
Hm….
