An emergency hearing has been called to determine whether Matchroom Boxing can stage the Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr clash
A chaotic negotiation period continues for a fight that so many boxing fans crave.
Jaron Ennis (35-0, 31ko’s) and his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing have been calling for this fight since their move up to light middleweight in 2025.
The Philadelphian born star unified the welterweight champion last April at Boardwalk Hall, where he dominated Eilmantas Stanionis.
He now looks to dominate a new division, with the Vergil Ortiz Jr (24-0, 22ko’s) fight widely declared as number one vs number two.
Neither fighter holds a world title, but that has not stopped fight fans for calling for what will be one of the highest level fights in the boxing calendar.
Negotiations for this fight have been far from straightforward.
Team Ortiz Jr has spiralled into chaos in recent times.
A fallout between promoter, fighter and manager has casted doubt over this fight.
Ortiz Jr has been promoted by Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions for a number of years.
A lawsuit was filed on Ortiz’s behalf Thursday in a Nevada court that requests the termination of his promotional contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s company.
The latest update in this saga is that an emergency hearing has been set to decide whether Matchroom Boxing can stage Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr without the involvement of Golden Boy Promotions.
The hearing is set for Friday.
Sources suggest that all parties hope to find a solution prior to the hearing.
Ortiz Jr implies that his contract states that he is not contractually obliged to Golden Boy if the promotion doesn’t have a broadcast agreement.
It is believed that Golden Boy are in negotiations to renew their broadcast deal with DAZN.
DAZN has informed Golden Boy that the contract relies on successfully finalising the Ennis vs Ortiz Jr fight.
