‘Boots’ is reportedly close to penning a contract for his next fight.
Jaron Ennis has not been seen in the ring since last October, when he claimed a first-round stoppage win over Uisma Lima.
The 28-year-old was reportedly scheduled to face Vergil Ortiz Jr next, but a legal dispute between Ortiz and Golden Boy Promotions halted the fight negotiations.
Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on when Ennis will lace up his gloves again.
This week, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, provided an update and teased who his next opponent could be.
He told BoxingScene: “There are talks.
“I mean, we were right on the line with Vergil Ortiz. We were planning media tours, that’s how close we were.
“And now with the great news about DAZN and Top Rank working together, and obviously our relationship with Top Rank, there have been some conversations with Xander Zayas.
“There’s no media tour planned on that one, but I just think as good a fight as the Ortiz fight was, Xander Zayas is right up there as well.
“Also, we have Josh Kelly, [the IBF] champion in the weight class as well.
“So it’s been a bit of a frustrating time for ‘Boots’, if I’m honest. He was due to fight in April/May.
“It’s going to be June now, but I guarantee he will be in a big fight next.
“We’ll decide that – I think by the end of next week, we will be pulling the trigger on a ‘Boots’ fight.
“So it’s imminent.”
Jaron Ennis unified the WBA and IBF welterweight titles by defeating Eimantas Stanionis in April 2025.
After that, ‘Boots’ moved up to take on a new crop of contenders.
He used his first 154lb outing against Lima as a tune-up, but ended the fight in the opening round.
Next time we see him, ‘Boots’ could be challenging for world titles in a new division.
