Eddie Hearn slams “cringe” Zuffa belt

Eddie Hearn mocks Dana White and Zuffa Boxing’s Zuffa world championship belt that is set to be up for grabs for the first time in March.

Eddie Hearn has expressed his thoughts on official launch of Zuffa boxing’s Zuffa world championship belt.

Dana White announced that Jai Opetaia will challenge Brandon Glanton in the Australian’s first fight since signing with Zuffa Boxing.

Opetaia is believed to be defending his IBF and Ring Magazine world titles whilst also challenging for the vacant Zuffa cruiserweight title.

The bout scheduled for March 8th will be the inaugural fight that a Zuffa belt will be up for grabs.

Zuffa and Dana White have plans to replicate their model of the UFC in mixed martial arts that has seem them monopolise the market and dominate the sport.

The UFC are the leading promotion of MMA and do not work and co-operate with other promotions.

With the boxing market already being extremely established, for Zuffa to replicate this successfully it will undoubtedly take time but signings like Opetaia showcase the power they possess.

Zuffa plan to disregard the four recognised major governing bodies the WBC, WBO, WBA and IBF which has sparked controversy in the industry.

Chairman of Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn has doubled down on the traditional methods of boxing and has continuously vocalised his opinion on Dana White and Zuffa Boxing’s entrance into the space.

Whilst Hearn has remained extremely complimentary of Dana White as a businessman and operator, Hearn has slammed the concept of the Zuffa belt.

Speaking to IFL TV, Hearn described it as “the cringiest sh*t I’ve ever seen,”.

“You know I would never do that, but I was just laughing because I was reading about, whenever it is, Jai Opetaia fighting Brandon Glanton for the Zuffa championship of the world, and I was thinking, ‘Do you know what? I could just do that.’ That would be quite amusing. Why don’t we do an iFL one as well?”

Hearn insists that the four governing bodies bring a huge amount of legacy to the sport and inspire fighters across generations.
