Hearn reveals Ennis’s likely next opponent.
Jaron Ennis is considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, a status he achieved officially following his destruction of Xander Zayas just the other week.
In doing so, Ennis became the unified super-welterweight champion, his second two-belt reign across two weights. The ease at which he achieved this feat really got the boxing world talking.
And of course, talk after a big performance always involves the same thing: who the fighter will face next. And following Ennis’s win over Zayas, that’s exactly what people have been talking about.
Several different names have been part of the conversation regarding who the American could step in the ring with in his next contest, and they all appeal in different ways.
Fellow champion Sebastian Fundora, of course, presents a unique challenge for anyone. A 154-pounder who stands just under 6’6″ is nobody’s idea of a good time, not even someone like Ennis.
The Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight is one everyone still wants to see. An all-American matchup between two unbeaten fighters for the unified championship? You won’t get complaints from anyone.
Only, Fundora has mandatory obligations to fulfil, while the Ortiz bout seems like one that is a while away from being made.
But in a recent interview, Eddie Hearn has stated who has a “very good chance” of fighting Ennis next.
“There’s a very good chance that Josh Kelly will fight ‘Boots’ [Ennis] in November … There could be a huge fight for Josh Kelly at the back end of the year”, Hearn told iFL TV.
While the Matchroom Boxing boss did also state that the Fundora and Ortiz fights were possible, it seemed that Kelly was deemed the most likely opponent for Ennis next.
Should that fight occur, it would be a three-belt unification with Kelly’s IBF title on the line.
