Eddie Hearn unveils several exciting pieces of news.
Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn has revealed a number of exciting new pieces of information in a new interview with iFL TV.
There are quite a few things to cover, so let’s get straight into it.
Firstly, Hearn has made an offer to Dana White to release UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall from his contract with the MMA company.
“I would like Dana White to release Tom Aspinall from his UFC contract,” Hearn stated, “and I will guarantee Dana White, in writing, that I will pay Tom Aspinall a minimum–probably five times more–but a minimum of three times more [than] what Dana White is payin’ him.
“And I think for a hard-workin’, workin’-class man that deserves every penny he can get because of what he puts his body through–and we’ve seen that recently–that Dana White should be happy for Tom Aspinall to receive that deal.
“So, I would like to propose that. I would like to propose that Dana White should be happy for Tom Aspinall–who is extremely unhappy–and he should release him of his obligations with the UFC and allow him to go out and make considerably more for himself and his family, ’cause that’s what Dana White’s all about, isn’t it? You know, he’d be happy for Tom. So, that’s what I would like.”
Next, Hearn has hinted at there being some form of discussion regarding signing Chris Eubank Jr.
“Look, this is the situation: Everybody acknowledges that an Eddie Hearn-Chris Eubank link-up would not just blow up boxing. It would blow up the internet, right?
“But listen, blowin’ up the internet’s great. It’s got to make business sense for Eubank, and it’s gotta make business sense for me. So, are we in deep negotiations? No, we’re not in deep negotiations.”
Hearn did, however, hint at there being “throwaway lines” to members of Eubank’s team, but that certain reports he’s seen are untrue.
Regarding Katie Taylor’s last fight (expected to be staged at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland), Hearn said, “We’re workin’ really hard. I mean, I think that if we’re gonna do this, you’ll hear about it in the next two weeks. The beginning of September is the date, if it’s to happen.
“Nothing is signed or done. However, we are movin’ forward in the hope that we can get this over the line and announce it A-S-A-P.”
Lastly, Hearn stated that he is currently in discussions to stage another 5v5 event with Queensberry Promotions.
“I shouldn’t really say it, but I’ll say it anyway: we have started negotiations with Queensberry about another 5v5”, said Hearn. “I mean, it’s actually not 5v5. It’s 7v7, but it’s absolutely mouthwaterin’.”
When asked to name specific fights for the event, Hearn mentioned a rematch between Callum Smith and Joshua Buatsi as a possibility, following it up with, “Then you’ve got Dalton Smith against [Alberto] Puello, which is bein’ rescheduled at the moment. Obviously, you’ve got Galal Yafai’s fight to be rescheduled, as well.
“Hopefully, Ben Whittaker comes through ‘Popeye’ [Richard Rivera] in New York, and then he’s gonna be in a big fight himself around September time. We are absolutely rammed with stuff.”
Upon being quizzed about more bouts that may appear on the event, Hearn responded with, “[Giorgio] Visioli against [Louie O’]Doherty for the British lightweight title. George Liddard against Denzel Bentley.”
Smiling, Hearn finished with, “Johnny Fisher against Dillian Whyte.”
