Hearn refuses to back down.
If Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua were ever going to throw hands, it was thought by practically everyone in the sport that they would be doing so with British soil beneath their feet.
After all, both men are indeed British. Not only that, but they are the two biggest British boxing personalities of our time. So, up until recently, the thought of their clash happening outside the United Kingdom was nothing short of ludicrous to many.
Only, that is the reality we are now close to living, the barrel we are now very much staring down. Indeed, it now appears that this clash between two of the biggest big men from the U.K. will actually be taking place in the United States.
The historic Madison Square Garden has been named as the frontrunner to stage the massive affair, though this has understandably frustrated many British fans.
One person who is refusing to acquiesce to this reality is Eddie Hearn, Anthony Joshua’s promoter at Matchroom Boxing.
In an interview with talkSPORT Boxing earlier today, Hearn stated, “I mean, look, I’ve seen all the reports. You know, November 20th [at] Madison Square Garden. I kinda feel like right now, me and ‘AJ’ are kinda like the last two standin’ on the hill, wavin’ the Union Jack.
“I mean, Anthony Joshua made me insert a clause into the contract that said the fight must happen in the U.K. So, at the moment, it can’t happen anywhere else.
“Now, we’re under a lot of pressure. Turki Alalshikh, Netflix, sounds like Tyson Fury–it sounds like everybody’s agreed they wanna do this fight at Madison Square Garden. We don’t, right?
“I mean, you know, we wanna make it so financially unviable for them to change the contract that they’ve got no choice but to do it in the U.K.”
Another strange turn in a very strange situation.
