Conor Benn (24-1, 14ko’s) leaving Matchroom Boxing to join Dana White and ZUFFA Boxing was unthinkable to many.
It’s undoubtedly a sign of intent from ZUFFA, who are financially backed by SELA and Turki Al-Sheikh.
Many fight experts and fans have labelled Benn’s move as ‘one of the biggest betrayals in boxing’.
Matchroom and Hearn were the career long promoters of Conor Benn, publicly and financially supporting ‘The Destroyer’ through a two and a half year legal battle after failing two drugs test.
New entity of the Matchroom empire Matchroom Talent Agency announced the signing of Dana White’s UFC heavyweight world champion Tom Aspinall.
As the business moves continue to happen between the two powerhouses, the war of words is also continuing.
Despite being extremely complimentary of the UFC, and TKO as a sports business, Hearn has continued to question Dana White’s existence in boxing.
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani show, Hearn stated: “Without Turki and without SELA, TKO would not be in the boxing business”.
“Turki will be sitting there watching the ZUFFA shows and will be completely unimpressed”.
“Overpaying fighters is not sustainable”.
“Boxing is not for him (Dana White), it’s the worst business in the world”.
“I didn’t expect him to implode this early, he’s called me out for a fight, in boxing he cannot lace my boots”.
ZUFFA Boxing are just four shows into this long-term venture.
These events have taken place at the APEX in Las Vegas, with Jai Opetaia becoming the inaugural ZUFFA Boxing champion on Sunday.
