Devin Haney takes to X to call out ‘delusional’ Rolly Romero as negotiations for the potential welterweight unification fight have stalled.
Devin Haney (33-0, 15ko’s) and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (17-2, 13ko’s) have seemingly been in talks for weeks now regarding a WBO, WBA welterweight unification bout.
At one point the fight seemed inevitable, with rumoured dates circulating.
Romero stated that a May 30th date for Las Vegas was in the works, but it now seems the fight is in jeopardy.
Welterweight is a stacked division currently.
The other two belt holders are WBC world welterweight champion Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20ko’s), and IBF welterweight world champion Lewis Crocker (22-0, 11ko’s).
With British star Conor Benn (24-1, 14ko’s) on his way back down to 147lbs, there is a number of commercial mega fights out there for the champions.
Speaking to X, Haney has stated:
“Rolly [Romero] delusional acting like he some kind of draw but can’t sell out a ballroom.
“That’s why the fight hasn’t been made yet.. the money isn’t right I’m looking at other options he can go fight his mandatory since he’s such a draw”.
If the fight isn’t to materialise, who could be next for both parties?
Devin Haney’s mandatory challenger is Jack Catterall (32-2, 14ko’s).
Catterall’s manager Sam Jones has revealed that the man from Chorley’s next fight has been locked in, but sources suggest it is not the Haney fight.
Undoubtedly, one of the biggest fights in the sport is a rematch between Haney and Ryan Garcia.
With the controversies of the first fight, and two belts on the line in a rematch, it has all the potential to be the biggest fight of 2026.
For Rolly Romero, his WBA mandatory is Shakhram Giyasov (17-0, 10ko’s).
The 32 year old from Uzbekistan has been patiently waiting for his opportunity.
Due to the fight possessing little commercial value, Romero will likely be looking at landing the biggest fight possible for his first title defence.
