Talks are reportedly ongoing for unification with fellow American.
Were it not for his last fight, the consensus may still be that Devin Haney is not what he once was.
These concerns were certainly not without at least a degree of merit. At the end of 2023, Haney looked absolutely flawless in outboxing WBC super-lightweight champion Regis Prograis, winning a unanimous shutout on the cards.
But then what fallowed was a three-knockdown drubbing at the hands of Ryan Garcia, a fight in which Haney was a practical magnet for Garcia’s left hook.
Of course, Garcia would fail a drug test, be suspended, and his win over Haney was overturned to a no-contest. But while Haney’s loss could be erased, the punches he had taken that night could not be.
This truth seemed especially apparent in Haney’s decision win over Jose Ramirez in May of 2025, a performance so lacking in activity that the two’s combined number of punches ranked as the fourth-lowest in CompuBox history.
To many, it appeared Haney was still suffering from the beating he had taken from Garcia, but he would silence plenty of doubters in his next fight by beating undefeated WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr.
Now it appears that Haney (33-0 (1), 15 KOs) may defend that title in his next fight while getting the chance to win another at the same time.
It is being reported that Haney is in “serious conversations” to fight Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, the WBA welterweight champion.
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) himself fought Ryan Garcia, beating him on the same card as Haney’s fight with Ramirez. With this win, Romero won the WBA interim title, which was upgraded to the full WBA championship after unified champion Jaron Ennis moved up to super-welterweight.
This marked Romero’s second championship reign across as many weights, having previously won the WBA super-lightweight title in a highly controversial 2023 stoppage of Ismael Barroso.
A clash between Haney and Romero would see the classic “boxer vs. puncher” dynamic in play yet again, an all-American showdown for the unified welterweight titles.
The fight is being rumoured for the 30th of May at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, United States.
BoxingScene has learned that Rolly Romero and Devin Haney are in “serious conversations” for a WBA/WBO welterweight unification.
The bout would take place on May 30 at Barclays Center in New York.
