Chisora weighs in at heaviest of his career for Wilder fight.
Tomorrow, Britain’s own Derek Chisora will make what he says is the final appearance of his professional career. For his last assignment, he has chosen to face Deontay Wilder, America’s former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion.
Whether or not this is truly Chisora’s swansong, there is no doubt that he will be singing it soon, for the 42-year-old Londoner is a cygnet no longer.
This fight–his and Wilder’s 50th contest–is intriguing for a whole host of reasons, and while there is a favourite going in, nobody can say with 100% confidence what will happen.
Many have predicted a Chisora victory, but almost all of those predictions have involved some variation of, “But if Wilder can land….”
That must always be considered, for while it has not been present in his last few outings, Wilder was once the owner of perhaps the most potent right hand in heavyweight history.
So powerful a weapon was it, in fact, that it was essentially a cheat code, the equivalent of a group of friends playing rock paper scissors and one of them fashioning their fist into a thumbs-up with a wry smile and yelling, “Dynamite!”
And indeed, when “The Bronze Bomber” detonated on an opponent, he only needed a single stick of explosive artillery. When such a fighter exists, he will always have a chance in a fight.
Chisora is a gritty brawler who will literally go down swinging (just watch his stoppage loss to David Haye), and that is what has made him such a fan-favourite in Britain.
And for the weigh-in for the ever-nearer throwdown, Chisora has come in at a career-highest weight.
Indeed, the Finchley man tipped the scales at 266¾ pounds, outdoing his previous heaviest weight of 262¼ pounds in his 2016 knockout over Drazan Janjanin.
Wilder–always a trim, slender heavyweight–came in at 226½ pounds, merely a pound heavier than his last fight against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon.
It’s highly likely that this figure from Chisora will serve as extra force to thwack the American with just that much harder, though there exists the possibility that the Briton has unintentionally put on weight in his year-plus ring absence.
Chisora rocked up to the weigh-in wearing a mask of Tyson Fury’s face, just as he wore a mask depicting the visage of Zhilei Zhang at the weigh-in for his 2024 fight with Joe Joyce.
Chisora made no secret of the fact that it was a mental tactic meant to rile Wilder up, as unlike Chisora, Wilder has never made peace with his defeats to “The Gypsy King”.
So, we know Chisora has the psychological battle won already. Now it’s time for the physical one.
